I'm a Solution Architect and Technical Leader focused on bespoke development, cloud-hosted SaaS solutions, and enterprise systems.

I'm passionate about software architecture and development: designing systems, leading the teams that build them, and staying hands-on enough to know whether an architecture actually holds up once it's live. I've taken products from a first sketch through to production and supported them for years afterwards, including mylo and SERPsketch, two SaaS platforms I've built and run end to end. That teaches you things a greenfield design never will.

I specialise in the Microsoft development stack and Azure: .NET, ASP.NET, SQL Server, Azure Container Apps, AKS and more, alongside modern web development using frameworks such as React and Angular. I favour a lightweight approach to architecture: taking ideas from Clean, Hexagonal and Onion architectures and DDD, and applying them pragmatically to the problem at hand.

This site is where I collect my thoughts on software architecture, leading technical teams, and the recurring challenges of bespoke software and SaaS delivery. If you want to see how I think, start with my Architecture Principles, or have a look through the Articles. Get in touch if you'd like to talk.

Outside of work, I'm a keen golfer (playing off a handicap of 10, representing Sidmouth Golf Club in the Dartmoor and East Devon leagues) and a fly fisherman, chasing trout across south-west reservoirs like Kennick, Wimbleball, Blagdon and Chew. I live in Sidmouth, in the East Devon National Landscape, and spend a lot of my downtime exploring the coast and Dartmoor.

The ideas, opinions and experience here are my own. Very little of it claims to be original: it's my take on established ideas, and I've tried to credit sources throughout. If I've missed one, please let me know. I use AI (Claude) as a writing and research assistant, to help turn rough notes into prose and to check references.
